We made a mistake to bump the minimum requirement for PHP to 8.2
After some research we found that there are still a large percentage of WordPress sites using PHP 7.4 and we recognize many hosts still run them and don’t give users the ability to change the version of PHP used or cant because of other plugins they are using along side don’t yet support newer versions of PHP.
We were under the assumption that plugins got on board with making sure that they work with the latest PHP as WordPress and WooCommerce themselves were making great strides to do the same, seeing how these versions of PHP were past end-of-life/security support.
Because of that we felt that our resources to keep supporting CoCart on these versions would be taxing and focused on managing only supported versions of PHP ensuring CoCart was working with the latest seeing how the newer versions of PHP also increase performance which is what you want for a headless store in the first place.
However, our recent updates has had us rethink this now that we are close to finishing a complete headless solution for WooCommerce. We want to provide options for all users as long as we can. So should we need to use a function from future PHP versions we will continue to do our best in using polyfill functions instead.
Our plugins have been tested on 7.4, 8.0 and 8.1 and found no issues. Other than performance degradation on the older PHP versions, CoCart still works just the same.
It is our hope now that those who could not update CoCart due to this PHP requirement change will consider doing so now and those who left return after letting CoCart go because of it.
